Divine Mercy Parish
Sacrament of Confirmation
Class for those preparing for
Confirmation (11th & 12th Grade) are held once a month on a Sunday from
10:00am to 12:30pm at our 16th Avenue Christian Fromation Center. In
addition, candidates must attend a retreat, day of reflection and a sponsor
session. Students are expected to ask off for these dates from school events
or from jobs. Employers and coaches DO understand and will allow time
off when given proper notice of your unavailable dates. The Christian
Formation Team will assist you in speaking to your boss/coach if they are
unwilling to accommodate you. Total commitment is required from those
wishing to be confirmed.
CONFIRMATION READINESS: candidates must be a junior in high school or
at least 16 years of age, baptized, have received the sacraments of First
Eucharist and Reconciliation prior to the beginning of the Confirmation
year. One year prior
formation is mandated in order to receive the sacrament.
Confirmation must be the free choice of the
individual. Parents may require their children to attend preparation
sessions, however, no individual will be confirmed unless it is their own
expressed desire.
CHOOSING A SPONSOR: a sponsor is a companion and guide who gives
spiritual help and encouragement to a person who is preparing to receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation. The sponsor's function is to take care that the
person confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills
the duties inherent in the sacrament. A sponsor must: be designated by the
one to be confirmed; be at least 16 years of age; be a confirmed and
practicing Catholic; not be the mother or father of the candidate.
